VANGILE’s STORY
Removed from school by her family at the age of 15, Vangile (surname withheld to protect the identity of her family) recalls her experience of bride abduction. She explains how it is common practice in rural villages throughout southern Africa for young girls to be abducted by men who seek to marry them.
Her life, she explains, was riddled with beatings and other forms of violence from her eldest brother - which was condoned by her mother. She has been on the run for most of her life: first, running away from her abusive family and later from her abusive husband.
She speaks to us in isiZulu which is translated into English by Wits University Education undergraduate, Lebohang Molefe.
Vangisa's story forms part of a podcast on gender violence in education on http://www.developmentagenda.com
